Northern Tamil Association – Grand Diwali Celebration 2007

Diwali was celebrated in a grand style on 28th October 2007 at Wythenshawe Forum Hall, Manchester.

The Chief Guest was Mr Gangai Amaren, who lit the traditional oil lamp and inaugurated the function. Dr Jino Sukumar, President of NTA welcomed the audience and touched briefly on the achievements and the phenomenal growth of the Association in the last year. The highlight of the celebration was the gala musical programme presented by Mr Gangai Amaren, Mr SPB Charan, Mr Venkat Prabu and Ms Suchithra Ramadurai. Mr Gangai Amaren enthralled the audience with his timely sense of humour and witty remarks. The group sang the popular Tamil songs from the past as well as from the recent movies with their mesmerising voices. They were supported very well by the Chithralaya music band who were at their best. Mrs Subo Arumugam compeered the whole programme and her verbal interlude with Mr Gangai Amaren was hilarious. The auditorium was packed to its capacity of about 750 and towards the end of the programme, it was a fantastic sight to watch all the adults and the children dancing way to the fast music in the front part of the hall, with frenzy.

Ms Sujatha Ramakrishnan thanked all those who worked very hard to make the function a great success. Mr A. Chidambaram was elected as the President for the year 2008.

So many people, inside the committee and outside, were involved in the organisation of this event in various stages and without them it could not have been such a magnificent occassion. Many observers commented that they had not seen such a hugely entertaining musical event with big stars from Tamilnadu, in the north of England. Rightly so, as this is the first time that famous artists from Chennai have been invited to the north of England!

Who knows, this may set the tone for future Diwali events of the NTA, so as to celebrate in grand style!

Finally, NTA thanks all those who attended the function and supported the event.
